Key West Beach Update

Efforts to obtain a designated clothing-optional naturist family in Key West continues.

Members of the Key West Free Beaches/Florida Keys Free Beaches, in cooperation with South Florida Free Beaches attended a public Work Shop on March 30, 2010 held at the old Key West City Hall by the Key West City Commission.

Because of the election last Fall, the city commission has two new commissioners, plus a new mayor. This was the first public hearing since that election.

Those who opposed the designated beach attended and spoke. They represented about 40% of those in attendance.

A review of that public workshop will reveal the untruths, misrepresentations and out right lies spoken in opposition to a designated beach. Copies in DVD format are available from the City Clerk of the City of Key West. Phone: 1-305-809-3881.

Several supporters spoke in favor of the designated beach. Letters from officials of both Miami-Dade County and the City of Sunny Isles Beach in support of a designated beach and outlining the benefits incurred  from Haulover Beach were submitted to the city commissioners by Shirley Mason of B.E.A.C.H.E.S Foundation. Also speaking and representing South Florida Free Beaches was Richard Mason.

There was no vote to be taken, but, it became apparent to us that three of the city commissioners were outwardly opposed to a designated beach.

The city commission claims it has over 60 letters in support of a designated beach. They pointed out that most of those were from out of town non residents. It became apparent that if we are to succeed, more residents of Key West will need to write to the city commissioners and mayor.

Also, the lack of members of the business community, who will be recipients of the benefits of increased tourism were absent from the workshop.

The results of the public work shop was that the city commission has asked the city manager to seek another site for the proposed beach.

KWFB/FKFB, SFFB/FNA and B.E.A.C.H.E.S Foundation officers have previously searched the island of Key West and reviewd all the beach locations and the results of that search was that the East end of Smathers Beach is the best location.

It now is apparent that Key West is a more complex city than we previously thought.

South Florida Free Beaches will continue to assist the naturists in the Florida Keys in their efforts to obtain a designated naturist beach site.
